The Movement of Music
Photography
This series is inspired by music culture and performance. Using photography, I created images that imitate what you would view at a concert in terms of lighting. Many shows feature lasers and lights that sync with the audio. I used this concept to build a system to generate photographs and decided to not allow myself to do any re-touching on the images. Instead relying on motion and long exposures to create movement. Using three coloured light sources, I handheld the camera and pointed it upwards, moving it at random. To fit with the conceptual theme, the song being photographed was played in the background as the photograph was taken, moving the camera in pace with the music. I selected a variety of songs, found their BPM and tonal key, then used this to determine what colour the lights should be set to. Since this series is inspired by live entertainment, to generate the song list, I chose one song from each artist I’ve seen perform.
